Most Overgrown Shrubs Are Not Too Far Gone
They have just been sheared instead of pruned, usually for years

There is a difference between shearing a shrub and pruning one, and almost every overgrown foundation planting I get called out to in Stark County has been sheared.

Shearing cuts the outside off. It looks tidy for about three weeks, and then the plant responds by pushing a dense shell of new growth on the surface — which shades out everything inside. Do that a few years running and you end up with a green shell around a hollow, twiggy, dead middle. That is the point where people assume the shrub is finished and start pricing replacements.

Usually it is not finished. Proper pruning opens the plant up, takes the oldest wood out at the base, and lets light back into the interior so it fills in from the inside again. On most overgrown yews, boxwoods and privet around here, that is a two or three season recovery — and it costs a fraction of tearing everything out and replanting.

Timing matters more than people expect in Northeast Ohio. Spring-flowering shrubs like lilac, forsythia and viburnum set next year’s flower buds right after they bloom, so cutting them in fall or late winter is how you get a healthy plant with no flowers. Those get pruned within a few weeks of finishing bloom. Summer-flowering shrubs and most evergreens are late-winter or early-spring work. Dead, damaged or hazardous wood comes off whenever you find it.

I handle tree, hedge and shrub trimming across Canton, North Canton, Louisville, Massillon, Alliance, Canal Fulton and Green, and north into Summit County. That includes ornamental and small-to-mid tree pruning, privacy hedge work, foundation plantings, and cutting overgrown beds back to a line you can actually maintain.

How Our Pruning & Trimming Process Works

There are limits to the tree work we can do for our clients and it’s usually limited to what we can “safely do”.  We can only prune and trim bushes and trees and hedges that we can reach from the ground or with a 10 foot ladder.  If a ladder is not possible we can recommend a local tree company who can take care of any dangerous tree trimming that is beyond our scope.

  1. We start with our initial consultation.
  2. We will listen to your requirements, making any necessary suggestions.
  3. We will work with you to determine the trees and shrubs that need pruning.
  4. We show up on the scheduled days and prune and trim your trees and shrubs as promised.
  5. We will remove all of the trimmings and dispose of them at a green waste facility.
  6. The end result is healthy trees and shrubs with a clean, uniform look.

The final cost of your tree and hedge trimming will be determined by size and condition of the existing trees and shrubs.  We’ll also need to consider the site accessibility. We’ll only be able to provide you with an accurate estimate for planting and maintaining your trees and shrubs after a thorough site inspection.

If you’d like to get an estimate to trim your hedge, trees, shrubs, or bushes please give us a call 330-904-4196 or fill out our online contact form and we’ll get back to you right away.
